Bella's Adventures in Amalur, pt. 2

FYI...see part 1 of this blog series to get caught up on Bella's adventures.

The last time we saw Bella (which just happens to be the first time we saw Bella), she had just begun her adventures. Her character had just been created and was slowly progressing through the game tutorial...having bashed her way through several of the beginning monsters.

To note, my daughter is having difficulties figuring out what her preferred weapon/fighting style is. You start out the game with absolutely nothing. You quickly pick up a longsword and kill a few enemies with that...then pick up a bow and kill a few enemies with that...then pick up a couple of daggers and do a couple of stealth kills...then you get a staff and learn how to do some magical attacks. Obviously it's the tutorial, so it's attempting to teach you all of the game mechanics.

If she had her way, I think her ideal fighting weapon would only be the bow and arrow. However, the problem is that the game mechanics for the bow aren't quite in alignment with my daughter's constant button-mashing, fighting skills. She likes to just keep pushing the same button over and over and over until everything is dead on the screen. Well, the problem is that with the bow, the game only allows you a certain amount of arrows before you have to sit and wait for the quiver to auto-reload itself. Therefore there are times where she is just mashing the fight/shoot button...where her character is sitting there getting pummeled by the monsters until the bow finally reloads.

Well luckily for my daughter the game allows for two types of weapon attacks. So I explained the problem to her and she quickly learned to switch to the other button when needed. However, she still likes to use the bow as much as she can. She also apparently really likes to swim...here's a pic of her swimming with the a huge goldfish...luckily for her (or maybe luckily for the monsters) there are no monsters to fight in the water.

She's still trying to figure out her second weapon-type though. She wasn't very fond of the big sword or daggers. She liked the staff and magic-type stuff...but I still don't think she was satisfied...that is, until she found the huge-ass hammers that they have in the game. Here's a picture of her with her first big-ass hammer.

That's also a weapon that she can just mash the button over and over again...with astounding results. You'll also notice her choice of armor in the last picture. You start out the game with limited choices...a cloth mage robe, a light-leather armor for rogues, or a metal armor for fighters. You can see that she mostly chose the metal armor...with the cloth mage gloves for a little added flare. And with the big-ass hammer I think the picture is pretty much complete. I don't know that that's the way her character will stay...and in fact I imagine that she'll end up changing her look solely based on whatever looks best to her at that time (regardless of whichever armor piece provides the better stats for her fighting style...what is she thinking!!!...she must have learned that from her mother).

My daughter keeps requesting to go battle more monster-spiders...unfortunately, the spiders don't come along until a little bit later in the game...so I'm doing my best to push her along so that we can get to that point in the game. So that's all for now....happy gaming everyone...and see you next time for part 3!

Oh...almost forgot...here's the updated kill count so far:

Rats: 2
Tuatha Soldiers: 15
Spiders: 6
Trolls: 1
Wolves: 4
Bear: 1
Kobolds: 10

Total = 39
